The Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3/8-inch Stubby can realistically handle many passenger-vehicle lug nuts. In our test, it removed normal lug nuts and a lug nut tightened to 150 ft-lb—but it reached a definite limit and failed to remove the same lug nut at 200 ft-lb.
What we tested
We wanted a useful answer to a simple question: is this compact 12-volt impact actually enough for wheel removal, or does the 550 ft-lb number make it sound stronger than it feels in the driveway?
We fitted the tool with a 21mm impact socket. First, we used it on normal lug nuts from our vehicles. Then we used a torque wrench to establish two repeatable test points: 150 ft-lb and 200 ft-lb. The goal was not to recreate a laboratory torque standard. It was to show what happened on one real tool, battery, socket, and fastener setup.
Test 01
The first result was the one that matters most for everyday ownership: the M12 Stubby removed the normal lug nuts we tried on our Ford F-150 and Jeep Wrangler. It is small, easy to handle, and much less cumbersome around a wheel than a full-size high-torque impact.
That does not guarantee it will remove every lug nut on every vehicle. Rust, corrosion, damaged threads, incorrect installation, low battery charge, socket fit, and years of overtightening can turn an ordinary wheel nut into a much harder job.
Test 02
We tightened the test lug nut to 150 ft-lb with a torque wrench, put the 21mm impact socket back on the M12, and tried the removal. The Stubby broke it loose.
That is a meaningful result because 150 ft-lb is a real wheel-lug specification on some light trucks. Ford, for example, specifies 150 lb-ft for the F-150 wheel-lug setup shown in its owner information. Your vehicle's manual—not our test—remains the correct source for your exact specification.

Test 03
We then tightened the same test lug nut to 200 ft-lb. This time the M12 hammered but did not break it loose. We stopped the attempt rather than pretending more hammer time would change the practical answer.
That failure gives the test value. The tool is capable, but our sample did not behave like a guaranteed 550 ft-lb removal machine on this fastener. If your work regularly involves seized hardware, heavily corroded wheels, larger pickups, or fasteners that have been badly overtightened, a stronger 1/2-inch impact is the safer bet.
Claim versus result
Milwaukee describes the 2562-20 as producing up to 550 ft-lb of nut-busting torque. That is a manufacturer performance rating, not a promise that every lug nut previously tightened to a particular number will release in the field.
Tightening torque and removal torque are not the same measurement. Once a joint has been driven, heat-cycled, exposed to water and road salt, or overtightened, the torque required to start it moving can be very different from the original installation setting. Battery condition, impact mode, socket mass and fit, fastener condition, and how long the tool is allowed to hammer also affect a real attempt.

Important distinction
An impact wrench is useful for breaking lug nuts loose and running them down carefully. Final tightening should be done with a properly calibrated torque wrench, using the vehicle manufacturer's specified value and tightening pattern.

Final verdict
The answer is yes, with an honest boundary. The Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3/8-inch Stubby removed the normal lug nuts we tried and passed at 150 ft-lb. It did not remove our 200 ft-lb test lug.
For routine passenger vehicles and light-truck work, that makes it a very useful compact impact. For badly seized hardware or heavier work, keep a stronger 1/2-inch option available. The real result matters more than assuming the largest number on the box applies to every fastener.
