How Much Torque Do You Need to Remove Lug Nuts?

The useful answer is not one giant advertised number. It is enough real removal power for your vehicle, plus margin for time, corrosion, and imperfect wheel service.

The short answer

For most routine car and light-truck wheel work, choose an impact that can reliably remove fasteners in roughly the 100–150 ft-lb range—with extra capacity for real-world resistance.

There is no universal minimum because the torque used to install a lug nut is not the same as the torque required to remove it later. Always check the vehicle's specification, then leave practical margin for rust, corrosion, dirt, damaged threads, overtightening, socket fit, and battery condition. Typical Lug-Nut Torque Ranges

As a broad orientation, many passenger cars are specified around 75–100 ft-lb, while many crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks land somewhere around 90–150 ft-lb. Some heavy-duty trucks, specialty wheels, trailers, and commercial vehicles require more. These are not substitute specifications.

Even within familiar vehicles the numbers differ. Ford publishes a 150 lb-ft specification for the referenced F-150 wheel fastener, while other Ford applications are lower. Check the manual for the exact model, wheel, fastener, and year.

Tightening Torque Is Not Breakaway Torque

The factory wheel-lug specification is the controlled torque used to install the nut and create the intended clamp load. Breakaway torque is what it takes to start that fastener moving later.

A lug nut installed to 100 ft-lb does not automatically require exactly 100 ft-lb to remove. After miles of heat cycles, water, salt, corrosion, dirt, and possible overtightening during past service, the removal requirement can be lower or substantially higher. This is why simply matching an impact's advertised number to the manual's lug specification is not enough.

Why an Impact Rated Far Above the Lug Torque Can Still Struggle

  • Rust and corrosion: road salt and moisture can bind the fastener and wheel-seat surfaces.
  • Previous overtightening: a shop impact may have installed the nut far beyond the published specification.
  • Thread condition: damaged, dirty, stretched, or incorrectly lubricated threads change the joint.
  • Battery output: charge level, pack condition, temperature, and battery design affect cordless performance.
  • Socket and extension losses: loose fit, adapters, long extensions, or non-impact sockets can reduce useful impact energy and add risk.
  • Test-method differences: a manufacturer's maximum rating and a driveway test are not the same measurement.

Milwaukee advertises up to 550 ft-lb of nut-busting torque for the 2562-20. Our test should not be read as a laboratory challenge to that rating. It shows why owners should not treat it as a guaranteed removal number for every fastener.

What Impact-Wrench Power Range Makes Sense?

For routine passenger-car wheels and many light trucks, a credible compact or mid-torque impact with proven real-world performance around 100–150 ft-lb can be enough. The important word is proven. Advertised maximum torque is useful for comparison, but independent testing and your actual vehicle matter more.

If you regularly work on corroded vehicles, large pickups, suspension hardware, axle nuts, agricultural equipment, or unknown shop-tightened wheels, buy more reserve. A stronger 1/2-inch impact can save time and give you a better fallback when a compact tool stalls.

Practical rule: Choose around the hardest fasteners you expect to remove regularly—not the easiest wheel on a clean vehicle.

What the Milwaukee M12 Test Showed

Our Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3/8-inch Stubby removed the normal vehicle lug nuts we tried. It also removed a lug nut after we tightened it to 150 ft-lb with a torque wrench. When we raised the test to 200 ft-lb, the tool hammered but did not remove it.

Do not confuse speed with accuracy

Impact Wrench vs Torque Wrench

The impact wrench is the removal and run-down tool. A torque wrench is the measuring tool for final tightening. Use the impact carefully to remove the wheel and, if appropriate, to bring hand-started nuts close to seated. Then use a properly calibrated torque wrench and the specified tightening pattern to reach the vehicle manufacturer's exact value.

Never assume an impact mode creates the final clamp load your vehicle requires. Also start lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading, keep wheel and hub mating surfaces clean, and follow any re-torque instruction in the owner's manual.
